I've been in the stereo game for 22 years. As I got older parts of my equipment got sold off with my vehicles and eventually ended up with no system at all. Fast forward to my latest vehicle, the stock system was horrible. Offensive even. So I priced out Skars 6×8 complete with amp and wiring kit. And a single EVL series 12" sub complete kit with amp and wiring. Below is my experience from placing the order to final product.
Price: I have built systems in the past easily exceeding $20k. I spend $700 with SKAR for the loaded 12" EVL sub, 1500 watt sub amp, four 6×8 component speakers, the 500 watt 4 channel amp, and the complete wiring kit for both amps. I literally don't know how they can sell this stuff so cheap but I am extremely happy. 10 years ago this same system from one of the big name brand companies could easily climb over $5k. The price tag made this purchase a no brainer.
Shipping:
I placed my order for the sub kit and 6×8 kit on a thursday late afternoon. The sub was set to arrive in one week and the 6×8s on that saturday. To my surprise I came home of Friday to the SUBWOOFER at my door! What? Then saturday the 6×8s came right on time. I was able to begin the installation a full week ahead of schedule!
Build Quality and Kit Completeness:
As a former Car Audio installer I can easily tell when I'm going to have issues with a kit or a component. First item I unboxed was the loaded sub, I was absolutely shocked at hle heavy it was. It must be about 70 pounds! For a single 12" enclosure! As soon as I laid eyes on it I was blown away. Not only is the speaker impressive but the enclosure is clean and very well thought out. Made of very heavy and thick material. I'm guessing its 3/4" MDF. Then on to the amps, very well packaged and clean. The amps look awesome in black with the heat sync fins on the sides. All my stuff is black so I loved that. The wiring kits were awesome too, I have purchased "wiring kits" before that leave out important things so I went out and bought crimp on eyelets and solder joints. Well I didn't need to. The terminal ends on the battery cables came installed and insulated with heat shrink. 😍😍 for the first time ever a kit with everything you need to install and then some! I had SO MUCH left over I was wondering if I forgot something. The kit even comes with beefy in-line fuses.
Install Process:
Install was a breeze, mostly because the wiring kits are so complete that I never had to run out to buy anything at all. Everything pluged right in and worked flawlessly.
Sound Quality and Tunability:
Ok, keep in mind I have been in this game for 22 years on a professional level and have seen and heard just about everything under the sun. Theres always two types of people I installed for, the subwoofer guys who want to pop people's eye balls out at car shows. And the guys who want the most accurate audio quality possible. Ready for this?? This modest SKAR setup does both flawlessly. Initially it took about 30 minutes to dial in my crossovers, and levels and tune my equalizer in my head unit but after a little tweaking this system is out of this world. I listen to all types of music, some deep hitting old school B.I.G. to metal core to R&B. Sometimes bluegrass, Dave Matthew's Band, etc. Usually I would have to adjust my system to sound good for each song with my past systems. Not so with this. It's so clear and clean that all I do is adjust my sub levels with the included remote knob. First thing I checked was the sub output, I dont have a DB meter anymore but my ass meter tells me its somewhere into the 125+db range. I've not pushed it too hard yet but this thing blew me away. Not only is there no drop off down to about 32hz but it moves the air like my old 8000 watt dual 15" setup. No one can believe the bass coming from this modest single 12" EVL setup. And i still have most of my trunk space. Ok but now what about low volume and fullness of sound quality? Stellar. The way I tune my systems is I get my component speakers dialed in where I want them with good miss bass, mids, highs and "tweets" and I fade the bass off around 320hz. Then I have the crossover on the sub fade off around 400hz. Wow, just wow. I played some acoustic guitar on it and it was like sitting at a concert. So clear. So crisp, strong midbass and excellent clarity from the built in tweeters. The sub picks up all the low mids and lows perfectly without having any flares in any frequencies or drop outs that I could hear. Just smooth clear music the way i would imagine the recording studio would hear it. And when you want to crank it, holy crap does it get loud! I mean it hurts! I cant listen to it super loud for long! And it doesnt distort. Even to the point of being painful it's clear as a bell!
Conclusion:
For the cost of one alpine 12" subwoofer you can have a full system that will destroy the name brand stuff. On a scale of 1-10 on quality, clarity and completeness I give it 11 in all 3 categories. I'm absolutely blown away. Do your ears a favor and pull the trigger on some SKAR equipment. It doesnt disappoint.

Only thing I would say that I wish they would change is the blue power cable to the amp needs to be longer. Routing from the battery to the trunk gives only a few routes and not a lot of slack to work with depending on your vehicle.
I was really blown away by not just the sound, but by the packaging and quality. Really the sound was great and the sub exceeded expectations for the amp size paired with the Evl line sub, but just the over all quality of the sub box, sub, packaging of the wiring was well put together. I realize a lot of people may not care about this sorta stuff. To me it shows that there is a lot of thought in putting this package together.
I don't think Skar needed a review like this to convince people to buy their product (They have been out for a while) I figured a review like this may come in handy to someone like my self who's getting back into systems looking for a solid review and a solid package that's not garbage. Other than the cookie cutter "sounds great!" :)
I got a single 12 and I already wish I would have got a dual. You won't regret it bucko
