The bags have firmly-closing double zips and the two included closure snaps are helpful in making sure they're closed. The hand pump works quite well, though I found it took a few pumps to get things started. I wondered how well the bag's port would hold over time, but my tests show that it doesn't leak, at least over a few days or when cooking. I'm not sure if I would trust these for long-term storage, though. One can wash and reuse the bags if you're careful.
The spring clips are nice to have, though I would typically not use them since I always have a snap cover for my cooking container.
The bags are pretty think and easy to close either using you fingers like a ziplock or with the tool included. It took me a minute to figure out the suction tool. At first it didn't seem like it was working. It was it just takes a lot of pumping to get all the air out. I did have a little issue with elk steaks, I defrosted right before cooking. There was just enough liquid in the bag that I sucked some of it up into the pump. The bag still stayed sealed but I couldn't get all the air out and I needed to take the bottom off of the pump tool to clean the liquid out. No worries though because the elk steaks came out great.
These bags are reusable. Cleaning isn't too hard. I like to turn the bags inside out to make sure I get all the previous food out. I've been able to clean all of them but one is stained a pretty pink/red color because I did beets in it. I don't think that is ever going to go away, but I kept it and it is now the beet bag.
We still have to use our Foodsaver for bigger items like brisket and roasts but I love having these on hand for normal dinners. I also like using these bags better than ziplocks since they are built for the sous vide, are easier to get the air out of and I'm not worried about the grade of plastic being used in my cooking.
The clips are a nice addition and they are heavy duty and work great on the pot and tub I use for sous vide cooking.
I still store all the bags in the box it came in with the clips, closer clips, all the bags and the pump. Maybe I'll come up with a better way to store these later but so far it is the easiest way I've found to keep everything together.
I haven't used the bags just for storage since I have a foodsaver and I'm usually don't quite a few packs at a time if I'm doing that. But if you don't have a food saver then this could be a good option for that as well.
For around 25 dollars you get a lot of bags and since they are reusable I found it to be a good deal. For this price I feel like I can throw a bag out if it seems unsalvageable after cooking without feeling bad.
Super happy with these bags and don't think I'll ever go back to a regular ziplock again.
Update: I put some tape over the vacuum seal and that prevents it from leaking.
If you've never made Sous Vide chicken breast, try it. Buy boneless breasts. Thin ones (1" or less) take an hour at temperature (I use 146 degree) to cook and thick ones take about 2 hrs. I use the large, thick ones and slice them when they are cooked. You don't even need to add salt; the natural flavor of the chicken does not drain away and the chicken is moist and tender. I made these for someone for a "Chicken Caesar Salad" and they were so much more delicious than the normal broiled or boiled version.
The food saver type food sealers are nice, but they break pretty easily and the hand pump is easier to store.
While they might be OK as freezer bags, in the Sou Vide, they lose vacuum and the bags fill with hot water.
Five bags, careful food positioning and sealing, five leaks -- usually at the seam.
Stay away
The bags come with 4 clips that are useful for hanging the vacuum sealed bag over the edge of a water bath for sous vide cooking. I can testify that these clips have the necessary strength to hold the bags for sous vide cooking without being too difficult to use.
I have a Food Saver that has a vacuum bag attachment (meant for Food Saver zip lock bags with a vacuum port). I tried the attachment on these bags and was happy to find that it worked.. albeit with some finagling. Much easier than using the hand pump (which works just fine, this is just an easier alternative).
Overall, these are nice, sturdy vacuum bags that provide an excellent budge approach to food vacuuming.
