Nah this thing could kill the family dog as it absolutely pumps air in or out of the room, fast enough to notice it at every doorway.
While it's a little noisy (and I mean just a little, it is well optimized), it is purely because of the sound of the air rushing through this thing. The motor makes the gentlest of hums that could barely be heard, but nearby it you can hear the air really rushing around. I have a couple in the basement of my house by where I do wash, and I may end up replacing the 10 feet leading up to and from it with insulated ducting just to try to cut down on the sound a little, but in the room a few feet from it (not insulated yet), i can just barely hear it. In fact I more hear the sound of the air rushing through the flex tube in the ceiling more then the fan it's self.
Worth noting a mistake was made and one ended up being in direct weather for about 2 years straight and still functioned.
Any time I get a duct fan, it is and will be one of these (in various sizes).
The most recent one is being used to vent out a server room with 1 almost full rack, and a 12 is being used to keep a computer room about the size of a living room cool.
TIP: When mounting, use rubber or nylon washers to help reduce transmitted vibration. Also you can't really get a screwdriver lined up very well from above, so consider either running the screws up from beneath with lock-washers on top, or use hex-head screws so can use a tool to hold the top still better while you tighten your washers beneath. Pay attention to the arrow which indicates the direction of air flow.
When choosing whether to push air in or pull air out, consider the overall airflow of the space and whether you want to create a positive or negative pressure. Many will default to using such a fan to pull air out, but in some cases you could be better off pushing fresh air in and letting that force out the existing air. What is safe and appropriate depends entirely on your application and you should consult local building codes.
It makes the other supposedly "quiet" duct fan I had purchased sound like a freight train. (That one gets sent back.)
