Benefits of iPower HPS Grow Lights
While growing a garden indoors is a great way to enjoy fresh produce all-year long, you'll need extra lighting in order to produce healthy and dense vegetation. IPower High pressure sodium or HPS grow lights emit a strong, warm white light that helps to stimulate plant and flower growth. The Kelvin color temperature of these bulbs can range from 2100K to 3000K with multiple wattage options. High pressure sodium grow lights emit a lot of red spectrum light which is better suited for the flowering stage. They also emit a higher than average amount of blue spectrum light which is beneficial during the growth cycle of plants. They are not well suited during vegetative growth, since plants typically need the crisp white wavelengths of metal halide grow lights. For this reason, many indoor growers switch their lights as needed.
iPower HPS grow lights tend to be much more efficient than other alternatives and have a longer life span, saving you money on energy bills and replacements. Although they are about 30 percent more efficient than incandescent, much of the power consumed by an HPS lamp is lost as heat. Because these lamps do put out a lot of heat, it's important to keep them about 12 to 18 inches away from the plant. Anything closer than that will start to burn most plants. The heat generation may be an issue in warmer climates or the summer months, but it can help mitigate the cold in the winter or colder climates.

iPower Digital Dimmable Grow Light Ballast - 400W, 600W, 1000W
Want to grow bigger and better plants? Tired of yielding less due to poor weather? iPower HPS/MH Digital Dimmable Grow Light System is the solution for all indoor & greenhouse gardens.
iPower Super HPS & Metal Halide Lamp - 400W, 600W, 1000W
Super High-Pressure Sodium Bulb
produces light by an electric arc through the sodium mixture within the filament.
The sodium light with its superior long-wavelength light and lumen-per-watt performance is best suited for plants in the flowering stage.
Best for big blooms and radiant flowers
Metal Halide Bulb
produces light by an electric arc through the vaporized mercury and metal halides, a mix of metals and halogens.
The filament generates a wider spectrum of wavelengths of light, produces more short-wavelength light and has strong light penetration.
Best for optimized vegetative growth
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How many plants can fit under a 4' x 4' (16 sq. ft.) area?
A: The amount of plants that can fit in a 4' x 4' area is completely dependent on the size of the plants and the size of the pots used. A five gallon pot is about 12" in diameter on the bottom, which means you may have up to 16 pots in a 4' x 4' area.
Q: Can a lower wattage lamp be used with a higher wattage iPower ballast, and vice-versa?
A: Different mismatched wattage lamp and ballast per light fixture may cause premature ballast and/or lamp failure, and is not covered under warranty. Please use the same paired wattage lamp and ballast per light fixture; the dimming feature is designed for the purpose of a lowering lamp output when needed.

my apollo setup came with 2 bulbs, a MH and a HPS. i would like to note that the iPower bulbs have a slightly different spectrum (2100k vs 2000k) I think I, and even more so, the plants, like the ipower bulb better. Also note that the iPower bulbs are slightly skinnier, and about the same price. in a cool tube setup, the bulb being skinnier than other bulbs could mean that the airflow is better.
the iPower metal halide bulbs I would also like to note, have a different spectrum vs the apollo. if i recall the ipowers metal halides run much higher in the spectrum, in the super blue range close to the eye-hortilux line, at 6500k. the apollo bulbs run around 4200k.
i havent tried the iPower MH bulb yet, but I have tried the Apollo bulbs, and so far, honestly, I would rather just run straight HPS. the plants are really seeming to flourish. the metal halide seemed to create a shorter more bushy plant, but to the point where its kind of making it hard to manage. I want a bit more stretch for now and it really seems to be helping, but not overly so, its about right.
if you have to decide on a single bulb, or rather a single type, I would just go straight HPS. also, If you are the spare bulb kinda guy, it makes more sense to have 2-3 HPS bulbs, which are much skinnier and IMO less fragile than the MH bulbs. less bulbs to store, and no reason to keep swapping.
At $10 a pop for a replacement...I didn't hesitate. The original still worked fine so they at the very least...don't just burn out after awhile. At least in my experience.
I've never used another type of bulb so I can't say if the iPowers put out better or worse light...but these bulbs were like the half the price of other brands so I'm sticking with it.
The iPower MH bulb I have works great too. Overall I've been impressed with iPower. Often you regret going with the cheapest option but nothing I've gotten from iPower has failed or disappointed me and the price is much cheaper than anything else.
