Customers are mixed about the performance of the tool. Some mention that it works really well, and has no major issues. That said, some say that it's not the greatest, and isn't suitable for high-precision work. That being said, it does work well enough to drill holes at reasonably accurate angles.

Customers are dissatisfied with the alignment of the tool. They mention that the adjustments on angle are weird, and the angle set is difficult and unreliable. They also say that the tool does not center on an edge and does not guarantee perpendicular. Customers also mention that it gets frustrating at wider angles because it tends to twist and knock the other side. They say the chuck itself is not straight.

Customers are dissatisfied with the rigidity of the tool. They mention that there is a very slight wobble when using hole saw bits, and the drill bit can wobble as they're pressing down. They say the tool feels unstable and dangerous, and that the base is not steady. Customers also say that the spindle wiggles loosely by hand. They also mention that the springs are really stiff, and it doesn't have the rigidness of a drill press.

This product does exactly what is says it does. It helps you put nice, true holes through pieces of wood where you can not use a drill press. I have not used it for angled drilling, and I would think that might be a bit challenging, but still, the results would be much better than a free hand job by the average home improver.
Positive: tool functions smoothly, and holds its angle very well - solid as a rock (not sure how anyone had wobble in this tool if they set it up right. However, there is a bit of play in the chuck/chuck housing. It will go a few degrees either way, but again, still better than free handing. The chuck works well, it is not a high precision chuck, but again, we are talking about a $27 tool, and for that price, it works very well.
Negative: the on critique I would have of the design is the base. They put a big groove down the middle of the base that you are supposed to use for on-edge drilling. It is a good idea, but it means that the base is not really solid when you are working near the edge of a piece of material. The on edge groove, really could be 1.5 inches, since over that you could use the flat. It is a bit frustrating, but you could easily screw a piece of plywood to the base and make it more stable near edges.
I would definitely recommend this product to the casual woodworker. It may not stand up to daily professional use, but at this price, it is a great tool to have around.
Update: 15 May 2016. My rating remains at 4 stars. I bought a Jacob's chuck for this item, model U4G61. It is a 3/8 chuck with standard 3/8-24 thread. Fit perfectly. Holds various bits (including Forstner) far better with no slippage. Also, this chuck has a perfect fitting key without all the slippage of the chuck and key that came with this tool. There is still a little slop on aligning the bit with the center of your mark - it is inconsistent - but for most of what I use it for, that inconsistency doesn't matter much. I use a drill press for exact centered holes. I still believe Wolfcraft could stop skimping and use better quality parts, tolerances and QA for what they charge for this. Still, there is little else like it on the market so I'm forced to use what I can find.
This isn't the least expensive drill guide you can get. It's the second-cheapest. The cheapest one is sold through Home Depot and gets horrible reviews. Evidently it's made of plastic and can't hold the drill in place.
I ordered the Wolfcraft with slight hesitation, because of some of the negative reviews. But for the price, I wanted to try it. And if I didn't like it at all, I could return it.
Summary: For the price, this is a wonderful attachment.
Pros:
- I can drill holes far more vertically than I could by hand
- Simply pressing down hard on the handle also keeps the drill in place better than holding the drill by hand - less walking
- ALL of the important parts are made of metal
- The v-grooves in the top of the base allow round stock to be placed, and then drilled properly - a bonus I didn't expect
- Goes together quickly
Cons:
- A channel on the underside of the base is intended to assist in centering the drill. However, on one end it is relieved 'wider' and as such, the centering function doesn't work right. The workpiece end up off-center. Might be possible to fill in the reliefs with epoxy to correct this.
- No obvious way to keep the chuck key from wandering off
Perspective:
- For the price, you probably can't do better
- It's not a drill press. But then, a drill press can't help you drill at 90 degree angles into a wall!
- The bearing in which the chuck sits does have some run-out, maybe 1/32 inch. Again, for the price...
I'd buy it again.
